BANKING AND LOANS

Co-operative Sector Specific Funds

The Industrial Common Ownership Fund offer a lending service specifically to co-operatives. They have two standard products. The term loan with loans of up to ten years with regular capital repayments, usually after a "holiday" period and the investment loans where deferred interest payments accumulate over an extended capital repayment holiday. Loans are usually in the range of £5,000 to £50,000 and security is usually in the form of a legal charge over the assets of the business and personal security is not requested. Triodos Bank

Triodos Bank is a bank which lends exclusively to the social economy and a high proportion of its customers are co-operatives.

Loans are generally between £20,000 to £2,000,000. with repayment period of one to ten years, twenty five for a commercial mortgage. Security is on the basis of legal charge on non-residential property of the business or wide spread personal guarantees at around the £2,000 2,000 level per guarantor. Charity Bank

Charity Bank is both a registered charity and an authorised and regulated bank, established to make affordable loans to Charities, Social Enterprises and Community Organisations, often where commercial lenders are unwilling to lend. Loans of between £5,000 and £500,000 are made from the deposits of individuals, charities and commercial organisations who wish to see their funds supporting the not-for-profit sector.

Loans over £500,000 can be packaged with other lenders. The Bank also offers savings and deposit facilities to those wishing to see their funds used in a socially responsible manner. Website: www.charitybank.org

The Big Boost

The Big Boost (England)

Individual or groups of young people aged between 11 - 25 with projects ideas to benefit their local community can apply for grants of between £250 and £5,000 through the Young People's Fund: Grants to Individuals. The projects should help young people to contribute to their community or help them to set up small businesses that also improve the economic prosperity of their communities.

Strengthening Rural Communities

Strengthening Rural Communities across the North West is a grant programme aiming to actively promote and support community-led initiatives that will improve service provision and increase economic productivity in targeted rural communities within the North West. The programme has two grant funds

First steps to trading grants

There are small grants to help organisations share good practice and learn how to set up a similar SE, the social franchising model. Organisations can apply for an Only Connect bursary. This is a visit scheme sponsored by Triodos Bank which enables voluntary and community organisations to explore their ideas for generating income by learning from an organisation that has already gone down this track.

If you have any idea for trading but are unsure of how to go about it, this scheme offers you the opportunity to learn from an organisation that has gone down this track. We can pay your expenses to visit another organisation (up to £100) and pay the host organisation £150 as a consultation fee for their time spent with you. The Be Cause Awards (UK)

UnLtd, the charity which supports social entrepreneurs has announced that it has launched a new award scheme in partnership with Bebo, a social networking website. The "Be Cause Awards" is a new scheme to inspire people to make a difference in their community. Using the Be Cause toolkit, applicants can put together a robust plan for a social action or social enterprise project and then enter it for a monthly Be Cause Award. If your idea meets Be Cause criteria, applicants can be in the running for a £1,000 award to help get a project off the ground.
